Welcome to the CCSFS Continuation
Below is an overview of the study cycle, along with key information for owners, FAQs, and important steps you’ll complete along the way.
Timeline
Terms & Conditions
You will be sent a welcome email with key study information and a prompt to review and agree to our T&Cs in the Joii App
Booking a study call
We will prompt you when it's time to book a study call. When you receive the link to book, please allow 48 hours so you have time to weigh your cat's food ahead of the call. Calls will take place approximately every 2 months
Weighing food
The day before your vet call, and the day of the vet call, please weigh your cat's food, so we can make a note of how much you fed and how much was left
Questionnaire
We will prompt you when your questionnaire is ready to complete as this will need to be done before each call, approximately every 2 months. Your questionnaire will be available on the morning of your study call and must be done before the call
Ordering more food
You will be able to request more food during each study call - the Joii vet you speak to will advise you on how to do this and the discount codes you will need, thus allowing you to order the food for free
Seeking support
If at any point in the study you need to reach out to us, please click on the bell icon in the Joii App which is located on the top right hand corner within your cat's Pet Profile
Steps & FAQs
If you are reading this, it means that you have successfully completed the Cat Cancer Support Food Study. During that study, we assessed the short-term effects of the study food (the 1st Phase Study). We mentioned that we might be interested in finding out more about the long-term effects of the study food. And for this, we will now be running the Cat Cancer Support Food Continuation Study (the 2nd Phase Study).
Just like before, Joii Pet Care aims to work alongside your primary care veterinary practice to help support you and your cat.
For the Cat Cancer Support Food Continuation Study, Joii Pet Care and Hill’s Pet Nutrition (the Study Food Manufacturer) have partnered again to assess the long-term effects of the study food, Hill’s Prescription Diet On-Care dry for cats (the Study Food) in cats who completed the initial 70-day study.
This 2nd Phase Study will run for 24 months (the Study Period) and require that you complete a questionnaire (just like the ones you completed in the 1st Phase Study) and a free vet consultation with a Joii vet for assessment of the study parameters, every 2 months. We will continue to provide your cat with free Study Food while they take part.
Please read the below carefully and we’d be grateful to hear from you if you would like to discuss anything in more detail. Please only agree to take part if you really want to. And if you decide not to take part, that’s fine. It will not affect your relationship with Joii Pet Care or your primary care veterinary practice in any way.
Aiming to help your cat and other cats in the future
In this 2nd Phase Study, we want to find out the long-term effects of the Study Food and check if it can help cats with cancer maintain body weight and appetite. We also want to measure your cat’s quality of life through the process. By taking part you may be helping your cat and hopefully many more in the future that have a cancer diagnosis.
Why your cat is perfect for the study
Only cats who completed the 1st Phase Study can take part in this continuation. This is because you are all familiar with the Study Food and the questionnaires and assessments. As well as having remained on the food since you finished your study run.
Continued support for 2 years more
The 2nd Phase Study will continue for 24 months and requires that you complete a questionnaire and free vet call with a Joii vet roughly every 2 months via the Joii Pet Care app. If your cat is no longer eating the Study Food, they will need to transition back to it. We will need you to take some measurements of your cat’s weight as well as assess your cat’s appetite and how much your cat may eat on certain days. You will be provided with all the Study Food you require for free (please let us know if you need new scales to weigh the food or your cat).
Getting started is easy
To start you’ll need to download the Joii Pet Care app, register your cat, and review and accept the terms and conditions. After this, you will be invited to book a video call with one of our Joii vets. Before the video consultation takes place, you will need to answer a questionnaire similar to the one you did before in the 1st Phase Study. During the call with the Joii vet, the Joii vet will respond to any questions you may have and arrange for more Study Food to be sent to you, if you need some. The Study Food will be free of charge.
Please note, that the Study Food comes in dry kibble form, and you can feed your cat other foods alongside the Study Food. (Ratio of 90% study food and 10% other foods).
We will be providing wet food alongside the dry kibble if your cat is interested in trying it. This food is already commercially available as the wet version of Hill’s Prescription Diet On-Care for cats (Stew with chicken and added vegetables).
Your Questionnaire and Video Vet Consultation
Your video consultation will be with a Joii vet via the Joii Pet Care app. Before connecting to the Joii vet you will be asked a few questions on the Joii Pet Care app. This will include information about your cat’s current eating habits, their weight, stool consistency, quality of life and health. The Joii vet will review your answers and most likely ask some more questions during the call. We’d ask that your cat be with you when you join the call. The Joii vet will introduce you to the 2nd Phase Study and respond to any questions you may have about the process. They will measure your cat’s body condition score and muscle condition score, to help them calculate specific feeding instructions. You will then be sent a feeding guide designed for your cat.
Every 2 months or as often as you need to re-order Study Food for your cat, you will be prompted to come back to the Joii Pet Care app, book your Joii vet video consultation and answer the questionnaire. You can also order food outside of the consultations if needed. The Study Food will be sent to you for free for a maximum period of 24 months.
Transitioning back to the study food
If you finished the 1st Phase Study a long time ago (i.e. more than 12 months), and your cat is no longer eating the Study Food, it is important that your cat gradually switches from their current cat food to the provided Study Food. This is important to reduce the risk of any tummy problems such as diarrhoea or vomiting.
To transition, mix your cat’s current food with the Study Food. Some cats don’t like mixing foods, so consider offering old food and the Study Food at the same time in two separate bowls next to each other. Over 14 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current cat food while increasing the amount of the Study Food. To help you with the transition, refer to the 14-Day Feeding Guide which will be provided by the Joii vet after the first video consultation.
If you have any other pets at home that may share or have access to your cat’s food (another cat or dog perhaps), it’s important that you do what you can to avoid any food sharing, as this will affect the results of the study.
End of study
After your final consultation at the end of the 24 month period, we will send you a new end of 2nd Phase Study report with insights on how your cat’s health progressed. During the 2nd Phase Study, you will have continued access to Joii Vet 24/7 video calls free of charge for the duration of your cat’s life beyond the study.
In the sad event of your cat not making it until the end of the 24 months period, please rest assured that we will be here to support you and provide you with bereavement support should you or any family member need it. And however many consults you come to complete, you and your cat will still provide a very valuable contribution to the study.
Summary of what will happen via the app;
- Enrolment via Joii Pet Care app and review and acceptance of the terms and conditions
- Completion of the Joii Pet Care app questionnaires before each video call assessment
- Attendance on video call with vet on Day 0, 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, 360, 420, 480, 540, 600, 660, 720
- Free of charge support via Joii Pet Care app 24/7 throughout and after completion of the 2nd Phase Study
Communication with your registered vet
We will ask you to contact your primary care veterinary practice to give permission for your cat’s clinical history to be shared with us. We will email you and your primary care veterinary practice at the same time and ask that you reply to all with your consent. This encourages transparency and open communication between all parties involved in the care of your cat. We will also provide them with details of the Study and happily answer any questions they may have.
After every Joii consultation, a full up-to-date clinical history will be shared electronically with your primary care veterinary practice. We will also ask that your primary care veterinary practice does the same to ensure the best advice and care is given. Joii vets are available 24/7 should you require urgent access to Joii Pet Care histories. This can be sent following a video consultation with you at any time. Throughout the 2nd Phase Study, we may ask/request that you contact your cat’s registered primary care veterinary practice if we deem it necessary for a physical examination to be carried out.
Data Protection/Confidentiality
Data collected throughout the study will be shared with the Study Food Manufacturer and used for the purpose of assessing the long-terms effects of consuming the Study Food. No personal data will be shared and you will not be identifiable unless you expressly agree that we may share your personal data with the Study Food Manufacturer.
After the study
You will have the option to continue on the Study Food or transition back to your cat’s old diet. You will continue to have access to the Joii Pet Care app and vets free of charge for the rest of your cat’s life.
Please read our FAQs below, followed by our terms and conditions.
We look forward to seeing you in the Joii Pet Care app. For any questions, please contact us at [email protected]
Thanks again for being part of the Joii community.
The purpose of the 2nd Phase Study is to evaluate the long-term effects of the consumption of a specialised, complete and balanced diet for cats with cancer, on appetite, body shape/weight and quality of life. It is possible there is a link between cancer, loss of appetite, body weight/condition and the animal’s quality of life and we wish to try to maintain a good quality of life for your pet.
We need to ask questions to have some background information about your cat and their condition in order to understand as much as we can about them. This will allow us to understand their progress through the 2nd Phase Study as well as if there are any reasons for concern. We will do this through Joii Pet Care app questionnaires or during the video consultations with the Joii vet.
We will ask about their hunger and interest in eating as well as weight measurements. We will also ask some questions that relate to their quality of life. Our vets will record your cat’s body condition and muscle condition scores during video calls too. All this information helps us to build a picture to understand if this food really can help support cats like yours and prevent any deterioration in their quality of life.
No, the Study Food and Joii video consultations that are part of the 2nd Phase Study will be provided free of charge to you for the duration of it. If you need pet scales or food scales to be sent to you, we will also provide them free of charge. If your pet needs any additional products or medicines for their health as a result of a Joii veterinary consultation, these will be charged for at the standard rates by your primary care veterinary practice. However, you have free of charge access to remote vet and vet nurse video calls via the Joii Pet Care app at any time of day or night.
We, along with the Study Food Manufacturer, may decide to publish the results and to use them in promotional materials. All your answers to our questions will be kept strictly confidential. Results from the study may be printed in veterinary journals and also in the non-veterinary press, but you and your cat will not be identifiable from any published work.
Yes, you’ll need to have the Joii Pet Care app downloaded and register your cat.
Yes. During video consultations with your Joii vet you can ask for advice. In some instances, our vets may recommend referral to your primary care veterinary practice if they are unable to provide adequate care remotely. If you are worried about your cat’s health between video consultations, it is best to seek advice from your primary care veterinary practice. You can request a Joii vet video consultation instantly via the Joii Pet Care app or make an appointment to speak with your primary care veterinary practice.
The Study Food comes in a dry kibble/biscuit formulation, if your pet will not eat dry kibble then unfortunately they will not be able to participate in the 2nd Phase Study. However, clean fresh water should always be given.
If your cat lives outdoors only, unfortunately they will not be able to participate in the 2nd Phase Study.
If your cat lives inside but has access to the outdoors, providing they can be present during the video consultations and you can adhere to the other terms of the study then they can participate.
As this is a long-term study (24 months) and we understand that some cats like to eat other types of foods and treats, we allow that cats have access to other foods. The Study Food should be 90% of the cat’s intake. The remaining 10% can be provided as other foods and treats. If you have any concerns about your cat eating please call through the Joii Pet Care app to discuss this with a Joii vet or nurse. If your cat accidentally eats something else in larger amount than 10% during the 2nd Phase Study, we'd ask that you let us know by accessing the Get Help card and reporting via the questionnaire or at your next Joii video call (this is so we can record this), if it happens regularly it may cause our results to be inaccurate.
When you open the Joii Pet Care App and navigate to the bottom right hand corner to select your cat’s ‘Pet Profile’, you will notice a bell icon on the top right hand corner of your mobile screen. This is where you will find the Get Help button to submit queries. A preview of how to access your Pet Profile will be sent with your welcome email, so you know where to find it during the Study.
If your cat’s health declines during the Study Period we’d ask you to inform us as soon as possible by accessing the Get Help card in your Joii Pet Care app. You will be able to give us details of the problem and speak to a Joii vet for free. There may be circumstances where the Study Food may no longer be suitable for your cat. If you are worried about your cat and take them directly to your primary care veterinary practice, please let us know via the Joii Pet Care app and ask your primary care vet to send us their clinical notes. The study team can then review the situation and a decision will be made if they need to leave the 2nd Phase Study or not.
Signs of declining health may appear as:
- Occasional or more howling as if in distress, than usual.
- Illness/vomiting/diarrhoea/coughing
- Inactive or low energy e.g. not playing or less affectionate or other changes
- No longer appearing happy, affectionate, not bright or alert, not making sounds that indicate happiness, not curious or interested in surroundings, not kneading/pawing as usual.
- Drinking an abnormal amount of water compared to usual
- Poor Appetite
- Losing weight or feeling more bony or light when picked up
- Sleeping more than normal
- Not grooming himself/herself
- Developed new medical condition or accident
You can request a Joii vet video consultation instantly via the Joii Pet Care app by using the Get Help card.
The Study Food is a complete and balanced dry food intended to be consumed by cats only. It is not expected to cause any harm at all to any of the cats participating in the 2nd Phase Study. The Study Food should not be consumed by cats who have been diagnosed with diabetes melitus, chronic renal disease, hyperlipidaemia and pancreatitis.
If your cat starts a new medication or develops a new health condition during the Study Period we’d ask you to inform us as soon as possible, the Study Food may no longer be suitable to feed your cat. The best way to do this is to notify us in the Joii Pet Care app by using the Get Help card, and then via a video call with a Joii vet. They will assess your cat and a decision will be made if they need to leave the 2nd Phase Study or not.
We understand well the nature of the illnesses our participant cats have been diagnosed with. In the sad event that your pet dies or is put to sleep during the Study Period, we will be here to support you through the difficult time that follows the loss of a beloved pet. In order to be able to do this, we would ask you to inform us of the event as soon as possible. The best way to do this is to notify us in the Joii Pet Care app, via the Get Help card. There you can provide all the information relevant without having to speak to someone if you don’t want to. You will also be offered a video call with a Joii vet, in case you feel you have questions or need bereavement support. Alternatively you can email us [email protected]. If you give us permission to do so, we will contact your primary care veterinary practice to obtain further information about the event.
We ask that you contact us via the Get Help Card any time something happens to your pet during the Study Period, even if it doesn’t seem related to the 2nd Phase Study. For example:
- Your cat has been prescribed new medication, such as appetite-stimulating medication
- Your cat has not eaten for 24 hours
- Your cat has lost weight
- Your cat has developed a new condition that requires management with therapeutic food
- You become concerned about your cat’s health (whether or not this relates to their cancer diagnosis)
- Your cat won’t eat the Study Food
- You’re unable to feed your cat the Study Food or check its weight
- You can for some reason no longer agree to the terms and conditions of the 2nd Phase Study
- Your cat has had a change in medication
- Your cat sadly died or was put to sleep
If your cat refuses to eat the Study Food we’d ask that you contact us through a Joii Pet Care app via the Get Help card for a Joii vet video call to discuss this in more detail.
If at any stage of the 2nd Phase Study your cat stops eating the Study Food it may help to try the following:
- Try feeding your cat in a quiet area
- Offer the Study Food whilst stroking your cat
- Try hand-feeding some of the Study Food.
If the above suggestions don’t work then it may help to soak/soften the food and warm it slightly to help make it more appealing. If your cat still refuses to eat the Study Food we’d ask that you let us know through the Get Help card in the Joii Pet Care app and choose to speak to a Joii vet via a video call. They will be able to advise you of the next steps. You may need to contact your primary care veterinary practice for an assessment. Your cat may need to be withdrawn from the 2nd Phase Study if we can’t get them to eat the Study Food.
If your cat accidentally eats something else during the 2nd Phase Study, we’d like you to let us know by accessing the Get Help card or mentioning it at your next Joii vet video call (this is so we can record this), if it happens regularly it may cause our results to be inaccurate or your cat may need to be withdrawn from the 2nd Phase Study. NOTE: occasional treats up to 10% daily calories are allowed.
The Study Food will be sent to you free of charge via courier after you’ve completed your first video call with a Joii vet via the Joii Pet Care app. The Joii vet will confirm your address and dispense the Study Food during the consultation. We will need you to provide your delivery address in the Joii Pet Care app for that purpose. You will receive one bag of Study Food per order and tins of wet food if you have requested it. You should be able to order more Study Food each time you come through for a questionnaire and video call with a Joii vet but also via the Get Help card in the app.
The Study Food is a complete and balanced dry food intended to be consumed by adult cats only. It is not expected to cause any harm to any of the cats participating in the 2nd Phase Study or other healthy cats that may accidentally eat some. The Study Food is not complete and balanced nutrition for kittens or dogs & puppies but would not cause any harm if consumed by accident. It is not an appropriate diet for cats with chronic kidney disease, diabetes melitus, pancreatitis or hyperlidaemia. If you have other pets that have eaten the Study Food by accident we recommend you call us through the Joii Pet Care app to discuss this in more detail.
If you suspect the Study Food has become damaged/spoilt/eaten by another pet and you have run out, please contact us through the Get Help card in the Joii Pet Care app or by email address [email protected] to discuss this in more detail.
If you decide you want to withdraw from the 2nd Phase Study, you may do so without explanation, and without penalty to you or your pets (your use of Joii products and services will not be affected). Any information you have given can be destroyed. If you do wish to withdraw, please let us know by accessing the Get Help card in the Joii Pet Care app or email us at [email protected]
Videos and clinical information (but not any personal information) obtained during the 2nd Phase Study may be retained for at least 5 years and possibly used in future research projects, and for training and education purposes. All data will be stored in a secure database only accessible to people working on the 2nd Phase Study. Some of the information will be shared with the Study Food Manufacturer. Please note that any Joii video consultation taken in your home will be visible to us. If you are unhappy with any aspect of this you can request to have your personal and clinical data (the video and other data) removed and permanently deleted without penalty to yourself or your pet.
If you give us express permission, we will share your contact details (including, but not limited to, name, cat’s name and email address) with the Study Food Manufacturer as well as the Colgate-Palmolive group of companies (who are the Study Food Manufacturer’s parent company) so that they can contact you at the end of the 2nd Phase Study for a testimonial about the Study Food. If you do not wish to provide a testimonial it will not affect your involvement in the 2nd Phase Study or your use of Joii products and services.
If you decide you want to withdraw from the 2nd Phase Study, you may do so without explanation, and without penalty to you or your pets (your use of Joii products and services will not be affected). Any information you have given can be destroyed. If you do wish to withdraw, please let one of our vets or nurses know, or email us at [email protected]
Please note that consent for the below will be recorded in the Joii App.
When you are registered in the Joii Pet Care app you will be asked to agree to the following: Cat Cancer Support Food Continuation Study (“2nd Phase Study”) run by Joii Pet Care (“us” or “Joii”)
